Do you know why Japanese plane blades are slightly curved? The curve acts like a guide rail, helping the blade seat straight in the wooden body (dai). If the back of the blade were completely flat, the blade could rotate, making the plane difficult to use. However, fitting the blade correctly—as shown in this video—is one of the most difficult parts of setting up a Japanese plane.
