A carefully planned bank robbery. A crew of dangerous criminals. And a young man who may be in deeper than he realizes.
In The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery (1959), Steve McQueen stars as George Fowler, a former college football star recruited to serve as the getaway driver for a gang targeting a Missouri bank. Led by experienced criminal John Egan, the crew studies the bank and rehearses its plan—but suspicion, personal motives, and growing doubts threaten to derail the operation.
As the day of the robbery approaches, the question becomes more than whether the gang can pull off the heist. Can its members trust one another long enough to get away?
Directed by Charles Guggenheim and John Stix, this classic crime thriller was inspired by an actual bank robbery attempt in St. Louis. The film was shot on location and incorporated local police officers and others connected with the real incident, giving it a distinctive documentary-style atmosphere. It also captures Steve McQueen early in his career, before he became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars.
If you enjoy classic crime films, vintage heist thrillers, and early Steve McQueen performances, settle in for this tense story of ambition, deception, and a robbery that may not go according to plan.
