Don Bosco's Factory: "A Glimpse of Hell"

Turin, 1850. Smoke you can taste. Hammers on iron. And rising over it all the Holy Name of Jesus, used as a curse. Don Bosco called what he saw that day "a bedlam of Hell." He asked the workers a simple question: what about your soul? They laughed. "We fear nothing but sickness, unemployment, hardship and hunger," they told him. "And when you die?" "We laugh." But it was the mothers who broke his heart begging him to find their sons another place to work before blasphemy and contempt for holy things became all they knew. This is the story of how one priest answered a factory full of despair with a workbench, a crucifix, and more than 300,000 young workers formed in Christian workshops over the decades that followed.
