Description

A lobster tail is the one thing at the warehouse club that charges you the most for the least, and nobody standing at that freezer case will ever tell you why. So I'm going to. I buy a plain thirteen-dollar bag instead of those stiff cardboard boxes of tails, and after forty years behind a fish counter I'd put it on my own table before I'd pay what Costco wants for the ones in the case. In this one I show you what that cheap bag really is (the word "langostino" printed right on the front, and why it isn't actually lobster at all), how to read a lobster-tail label in about ten seconds (warm water versus cold water, and what the shell tells you when the box gets coy), the price math they don't want you doing in the aisle (you're paying lobster money for a package that's half armor), the one cooking mistake that turns sweet little tails into pencil erasers (it's already cooked — you're warming it, not cooking it), and the honest spot where the bag loses and you should just buy the real tail. Forty years at the fish counter. Where a claim is about grading or labeling law, it's named on screen; where it's just what I'd buy, I say so. So tell me down in the comments: what's the one thing at your seafood case you've always had a feeling you were overpaying for — and what store are you standing in when you buy it? I read these, and the ones that come up the most are the next videos I make. Buy the tail for the show. Buy the bag for the eating. Educational, general seafood-buying advice, not a substitute for the storage and handling guidance on your own package — thaw shellfish cold, keep it cold, use it within three days of thawing, and if it ever smells sharp, sour, or like ammonia, don't eat it. ⏱️ CHAPTERS 0:00 Intro — the biggest rip-off in the freezer case 0:35 Forty years at the counter: "Is this a good deal?" 1:21 Reading the box: warm water vs cold water 3:18 The size grade they bury on the package 4:00 The price math — lobster money for shell 4:49 "Frozen is frozen": same tech, nicer box 5:42 The $13 bag I buy instead: langostino tails 6:13 What langostino actually is (little lobster) 7:14 The word on the bag that tells on itself 8:15 The lawsuits behind that honest label 9:22 The turn: the honesty is why I buy it 10:15 The #1 mistake — it's already cooked 12:17 Thawing it right + the 10-second smell check 14:16 Dish one: the lobster roll 15:24 Dish two: pasta, and the seasoning rule 17:17 Where langostino loses 18:17 Three checks before you trust the bag 19:39 Where to find it (Trader Joe's, Aldi, Wegmans, Pier 33) 20:42 The arithmetic: about three dollars a serving 21:43 Feeding a table: $26 vs $60 22:48 The six-point recap 24:01 Why I'm telling you this now #Seafood #Lobster #Langostino #GroceryTips #Costco #Fishmonger #SaveMoney #FrozenSeafood #SeafoodTips #LobsterRoll #BudgetGroceries #CookingTips #SmartShopping #SeafoodLover SOURCES (named on screen): FDA labeling rules (langostino/squat lobster); FTC advertising enforcement; restaurant langostino lawsuits/settlements; Marine Stewardship Council (MSC); store brands Trader Joe's, Aldi (Fremont Fish Market), Wegmans, Pier 33 Gourmet.
