Description

In 1956, decorated former Royal Navy diver Lionel “Buster” Crabb disappeared in Portsmouth Harbour during a secret British intelligence operation involving visiting Soviet warships. He entered the water and never resurfaced, leaving behind one of Britain’s most enduring Cold War mysteries. The Admiralty initially connected Crabb’s disappearance to trials of underwater equipment at Stokes Bay. But Soviet officials had reported suspicious diving activity near their vessels during the same visit, including the cruiser Ordzhonikidze. The contradiction quickly drew attention in Parliament and raised uncomfortable questions about what Crabb had really been doing beneath the harbour. Then the political situation became even more sensitive. Prime Minister Anthony Eden later told the House of Commons that the operation had taken place without the authority or knowledge of ministers. An internal investigation followed, while Crabb’s fate remained unknown. More than a year later, a body wearing diving equipment was recovered from Chichester Harbour. The remains were treated at the inquest as those of Crabb, but the cause of death could not be established. That left the central mystery unresolved: what happened during his final dive? In this video, we examine Crabb’s wartime diving career, the Cold War background of the Soviet visit, the secret mission in Portsmouth Harbour, the Admiralty’s public explanation, the Soviet protest, the government response, and the evidence surrounding the body recovered in 1957. We also look at the main explanations that have been discussed over the years, separating documented facts from later claims and speculation. If you enjoy British true crime, unsolved disappearances, Cold War mysteries, historical investigations, and real cases where the full truth remains uncertain, this is a story you won’t want to miss. 👍 Enjoyed the video?
