On October 24, 2004, a Hendrick Motorsports King Air 200 launched from North Carolina into low clouds, fog, and mountain obscuration for a 35-minute hop to a NASCAR race in Virginia and flew miles past the airport before anyone realized how lost they were. The flight carried two pilots and eight passengers, including 24-year-old Ricky Hendrick, his uncle John, twin cousins Jennifer and Kimberly, and chief engine builder Randy Dorton. Both pilots had thousands of total hours but relatively little time in the King Air, and the company's GPS training was done on the job rather than in a classroom.
