Description

🔗 Cookin got to be too much, so I wrote down the easy way. All 415 plus much more. Get em before they're gone: https://www.rubysrecipebox.com Ruby Dawson is eighty-two years old, and she cooked forty-six years in a South Georgia church kitchen for funerals and homecomings. Now she cooks for one, same as a lot of y'all. Every recipe in the church cookbook feeds six, you eat on it four days, and on the fifth day it goes in the trash. So she counts down 30 loaf pan dinners for seniors living alone, from her own Georgia kitchen to her friends' tables in Louisiana, the Mississippi Delta, Savannah, and San Antonio. One little pan, one plate, nothing left over and nothing to scrub, with no peeling, hardly any chopping, and the frozen seasoning blend and boxed shortcuts she swears are not cheating, honey. All the while a loaf pan sits sealed under foil in her oven with one plain white block from the store on top of a chicken thigh. Her children have asked her for years what goes in that pan, and she never once told them. Until now. In this one, Ruby covers: • Chili with cornbread baked right on top, barbecue chicken baked over a can of pork and beans, and a smothered pork chop in onion gravy • White beans and smoked sausage, sweet potato and sausage, a salmon loaf from one can like the hard years, and breakfast for supper because it's Wednesday • Cajun chicken and rice with the trinity straight from the freezer from Josette Landry of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, a mustard-smothered chicken thigh from Ernestine Pollard of Greenwood, Mississippi, Savannah red rice with shrimp from Lois Brannen of Savannah, Georgia, and a tamale pie from Lupe Salinas of San Antonio, Texas • Brown sugar ribs with no smoker, bread pudding from the bread you were about to throw away, and a chicken pot pie with two canned biscuits on top, all the church-supper standbys cut down to fit one plate • What was under that foil the whole time, and the supper most of us quit making when it got to be just us, saved for the very end Tell Ruby down in the comments where y'all are watching from, and which Southern supper you quit making when it got to be just you. Ruby reads every one of them herself.
