I spent my working life as a surveyor, forty-some years of it, out in the field with my instruments measuring land, setting boundaries, mapping the earth for roads and buildings and property lines. It was a good life's work for a man who liked being outdoors and liked precision, liked knowing exactly where one thing ended and another began.
