Description
The federal government once arrested nearly 80% of the men in a Florida town. All at once. For drug smuggling. That town is still standing, still frozen in time, and you can buy a house there for under $300K. Welcome to Old Florida.
While the rest of the Sunshine State was busy building condos and strip malls, these 13 small towns got skipped by the highway, ignored by developers, and forgotten by time. We're talking brick main streets that haven't changed since Eisenhower was president, mom-and-pop shops that predate your grandparents, fishing docks that still creak the way they did 70 years ago, and home prices that would make anyone in Miami or Tampa ugly cry.
In this video, we count down 13 of the most perfectly preserved, wonderfully weird, and shockingly affordable small towns in Florida, including a psychic colony 30 minutes from Disney World, a genuine cowboy town with a rodeo running since 1928, and a Victorian seaport with the oldest bar in the state (the Vanderbilts used to drink there).
Towns featured in this video:
13. Lake Placid — Town of Murals, clown museum, caladium capital
12. Clewiston — America's Sweetest Town, 1938 sugar company inn
11. Sebring — Circular 1920s downtown modeled after Heliopolis
10. DeFuniak Springs — Victorian Chautauqua colony, perfectly round lake
9. Arcadia — Antique Capital of Florida, real cowboys, 1928 rodeo
8. Cedar Key — Dead-end island fishing village, no traffic lights
7. Everglades City — Operation Everglades drug bust, Smallwood Store
6. Cassadaga — Psychic Capital of the World, 43 certified mediums
5. Micanopy — Florida's oldest inland town, Doc Hollywood filming location
4. Tarpon Springs — Greek sponge diving village, Epiphany celebration
3. Mount Dora — Festival City, Lakeside Inn since 1883, freshwater lighthouse
2. Apalachicola — Oyster Capital of the World, Forgotten Coast
1. Fernandina Beach — 400+ historic structures, Palace Saloon since 1903
Several of these towns have median home prices 35–44% below Florida's statewide median. DeFuniak Springs comes in around $220K. Clewiston around $233K. Sebring around $241K. Arcadia around $243K. If you're looking for affordable retirement, a relocation move, or just a weekend road trip through real Florida, this list is your starting point.
