Description
The Sun burns at over a million degrees. And the space between the Sun and Earth sits at around 270 degrees below zero. That contradiction makes no sense until you understand one thing: heat does not travel. Heat is created.
What the Sun actually sends is not heat. It sends energy in the form of light. When those photons hit matter, the atoms absorb that energy and begin moving faster. That movement is what we call heat. But in the vacuum of space, there is almost no matter at all. Nothing to absorb the photons. Nothing to warm up. The light passes straight through without leaving any heat behind.
In this video we explain exactly why space stays frozen even this close to the Sun, how the Parker Solar Probe survives inside the Sun’s outer atmosphere with instruments running at room temperature, why Mercury reaches 430 degrees Celsius on one side and drops to 180 below zero on the other at the same time, and what the Cosmic Microwave Background tells us about the baseline temperature of the entire universe.
The answer is not complicated. But it will change the way you think about the Sun forever.
