Thousands of nurses affiliated with the Tamil Nadu Intermediate Health Workers Association protested near the Rajarathinam Stadium in Egmore, demanding job regularisation, equal pay for equal work and job security. Reports say several protesters were detained or arrested after the demonstration continued into the night, while the nurses' association alleged that representatives who were taken for talks were subsequently detained. The controversy intensified after protesters and opposition leaders alleged that police used force against nurses and that women and children accompanying the protesters were also affected. These allegations have become a major political issue, with opposition leaders including Udhayanidhi Stalin, Edappadi K Palaniswami and Kanimozhi criticising the government's handling of the protest. The government and police's side of the events must also be considered before treating these allegations as established fact. We examine the nurses' demands, the sequence of events during the protest, the reported arrests, the allegations surrounding police action and the political debate over the Vijay government's approach to protesting healthcare workers. We also look at the contrast between the government's earlier public statements on women's safety and its present handling of this protest, while separating documented events from political criticism.
