Description

What happens when parents believe that educating a boy is an investment but educating a girl is a waste? In a small Nigerian village, Anna's parents make a painful decision. They stop her education at just 12 years old, believing that she will eventually get married and leave the family anyway. While her brother Michael receives new uniforms, books, and eventually goes to university, Anna is left behind. She works on farms, washes clothes, cooks, cleans, and takes care of the home. But Anna refuses to give up on her dream. When her educated brother returns from university and constantly mocks her for not being able to read, write, or speak good English, Anna secretly begins studying his books beside the river. With nothing but determination, she teaches herself how to read and write. Years later, she leaves the village for Lagos with one dream — to go back to school. But Lagos isn't easy. She struggles, works tirelessly, opens a small roadside business, and studies whenever she gets the chance. Eventually, Anna gets into university, graduates, and lands a well-paying job at one of the biggest companies. Then one day, she drives back to the village. Her parents think their daughter simply went to Lagos to find work. They have no idea what she has accomplished. And when Anna steps out of her car holding her university certificate, her parents are left speechless. This emotional Nigerian story teaches us that a child's future should never be limited because of their gender. Sometimes the person you underestimate is the very person who will surprise you the most. ❤️ If you enjoyed this story, LIKE, COMMENT, SUBSCRIBE, and turn on the notification bell for more powerful African stories from Rita's Tales. 💬 Question: Do you think parents should educate their daughters equally with their sons?
