The Battle of Longewala(1971): 3D Breakdown of India’s 1971 Defence

December 1971. In the dark, dozens of Pakistani tanks and thousands of soldiers roll across the Rajasthan desert towards one sand dune. On top of it: about 120 Indian soldiers under Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, with no tanks, no minefield, only a thin wire fence put up to keep camels from wandering. By every rule of war, the post should have fallen before sunrise. Instead, by the next evening, it was the tanks around it that were burning. This is the Battle of Longewala, told minute by minute as a 3D reconstruction: the first shot, the camel fence that looked like a minefield, the fuel drum that lit up the field, the three lost hours, and the two Hunter jets from Jaisalmer that arrived with the first light.
