Description
The Best Way to Get an Old Stain Out of a Linen Tablecloth (The Farmhouse Way)
There is a tablecloth folded in a closet in this house with a stain in it. The good one. And you know exactly where the mark is, because you have folded that cloth around it so many times that the fold has learned where to go.
That stain did not stay because you used the wrong bottle. Every bottle on that shelf would have failed you. It stayed because of something that happened before you ever reached for one, and it was probably the most sensible thing you did all day.
You washed it in hot water. Or you put it through the dryer. Or you ironed it, because it was the good cloth and you wanted it to look right going back into the closet.
And heat cooks a stain into cloth. Think of an egg in a pan. Cold, it is liquid and it pours. Put heat under it and it turns solid, and it will never be liquid again no matter what you do to it afterward. The same thing happens to the gravy or the milk or the butter sitting down in the weave. It sets hard and it grips the fiber, and from that moment nothing you spray on it is going to talk it back out.
So you did not fail to get the stain out. You cooked it in. And every honest thing you tried afterward was beaten before you started.
In this one:
➤ Why some of those brown marks were never spilled on the cloth at all, and arrived on their own in the closet
➤ The lemon juice and sunshine trick, why it works, and why it will put a tear in your grandmother's linen
➤ The white powder that does the whole job, and the one thing on the label to look for
➤ Why wet cloth lies to you, and how to judge whether it worked
WHAT YOU NEED
➤ Oxygen bleach, the powder kind. Look for sodium percarbonate on the label
➤ A stockpot, a bucket, a plugged sink or the bathtub
➤ Hot water
➤ One night
BEFORE YOU START
➤ No chlorine bleach. Not on old cotton and not on linen. It eats the fibre and turns aged cotton a yellow that does not come back.
➤ No lemon juice and no vinegar on a cloth you care about. They are acids, and an acid cannot tell the difference between a stain and a thread that is eighty years old.
➤ The cloth does not go in the dryer and does not go under an iron until the mark is gone.
➤ Test a hem first. There is always a corner nobody looks at.
➤ Rust and scorch do not come out this way. If somebody set a hot pan down and browned it, that is a burn.
Tell me in the comments what came out, and how many rounds it took you. And tell me your county, and what that stain is if you know, and what year it happened. Because I have a feeling that some of you can name the exact dinner.
I read every one.
Nothing here is lost. Just untaught.
