Description

On 7 December 1941, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Japanese pilot Shigenori Nishikaichi crash-landed on Ni'ihau, a tiny Hawaiian island Japan believed was empty. About 136 people lived there with no phones or electricity, and nobody knew about the attack, so they welcomed him until a radio broke the news. With help from a local couple he took up arms again, until rancher Ben Kanahele, shot three times, and his wife Ella ended the fight. Ben got a medal; Ella got nothing. The wreck of the plane is now on display at the Pacific Aviation Museum, Pearl Harbor.
