Description

continuous welded rail removes the regular gaps between rail sections, but the steel still responds to heat and cold. the key is controlling thermal stress through the rails, fastenings, sleepers and ballast. jointed tracks leave room for movement, while welded tracks restrain it. neutral temperature, thermite welding and track stability explain how this works, and why excessive compression or tension can cause problems. bridge expansion bearings and deck joints accommodate movement in the structure. where needed, overlapping rail expansion joints let the rails slide while supporting passing wheels. gas pipelines face a similar challenge. expansion loops allow sealed pipework to flex as its temperature changes.
