Description

Bafana “King of the Sky” Sindane’s WhatsApp messages have taken centre stage at the Madlanga Commission — and they have opened a new window into the controversial R2.2 million extortion case involving taxi boss Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni, Sindane and their co-accused. The case made headlines earlier this year after it was struck off the court roll when the prosecutor failed to appear, followed by the prosecutor being suspended and a complaint being lodged against the magistrate. The matter was later re-enrolled and remains before court. The accused have denied the allegations and are presumed innocent. Now, months later, evidence from Sindane’s cellphone is being examined at the Madlanga Commission. According to evidence presented on Monday, 28 September 2026, businessman Dr Tengane Thomas Ntuli allegedly paid R100,000 a month in so-called protection fees after securing work connected to the SANRAL Moloto Road project, with the alleged payments eventually reaching approximately R2.2 million. WhatsApp messages allegedly exchanged between Sindane and Ntuli were read out at the commission, including a message demanding an explanation for a reduced payment and warning that the operation could be stopped. But the WhatsApp evidence went further. The commission also heard about messages concerning alleged payments towards the legal expenses of Calvin “Gwabo” Mahlangu and Tshegofatso “Morwa” Makofane, both of whom were convicted in taxi-related murder cases. Chief Evidence Leader Advocate Matthew Chaskalson said the commission wanted to establish why Sindane and Joe Sibanyoni were involved in paying their legal expenses. The commission also examined messages concerning people allegedly linked to Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, as well as communications suggesting that police officers could allegedly be arranged as escorts for Sindane. Sindane was not personally present when this evidence was presented. His urgent High Court application seeking to stop the commission from hearing his evidence was struck off the roll on Monday morning. So what exactly do these WhatsApp messages show? Why was Sindane allegedly making payments connected to convicted murder offenders? What was his relationship with Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni? And what does all of this have to do with the Madlanga Commission’s wider investigation into alleged criminal infiltration, corruption and relationships between criminal networks, taxi-industry figures and police officers?
