Description

🌊 They accidentally drained an entire lake—and somehow, everyone escaped alive. On November 20, 1980, an oil-drilling operation on Louisiana’s Lake Peigneur triggered one of the most astonishing industrial disasters in American history. An oil rig vanished, a massive whirlpool swallowed eleven barges, a tugboat, trees and 65 acres of land, while an underground salt mine filled with water. 🛢️🌀 Deep beneath Lake Peigneur, 51 people were working inside the Jefferson Island salt mine. As muddy water surged through the tunnels, the miners raced toward the only elevator capable of carrying them to safety. Aboveground, the lake disappeared, the Delcambre Canal reversed direction and salt water rushed inland from the Gulf of Mexico—briefly creating an enormous waterfall in the famously flat Louisiana landscape. 🚨⛏️🌊 Nine of the swallowed barges eventually rose back to the surface. The freshwater lake became a deep, brackish lake, the salt mine was destroyed, and the geography of the area was permanently changed. Yet despite the scale of this catastrophic American engineering disaster, not one person was killed. 😳 This is the unbelievable true story of the Lake Peigneur disaster: an oil-drilling accident, salt-mine collapse and environmental catastrophe so ridiculous that it sounds physically impossible. 🇺🇸📚 👍 Like the video if you enjoy strange American history, maritime history, engineering failures, industrial disasters and true stories that seem impossible. 💬 Could you have believed that an entire lake could disappear in only a few hours? 🔔 Subscribe to HISTORSEA for more unbelievable history, forgotten disasters, maritime catastrophes and ridiculous true stories from the past. #LakePeigneur #AmericanHistory #LouisianaHistory #OilDrilling #OilRigDisaster #IndustrialDisaster #EngineeringDisaster #SaltMine #EnvironmentalDisaster #HistoryDocumentary #DisasterHistory #Texaco #TrueStory #HISTORSEA #MaritimeHistory 🌊 Welcome to Historsea!
