Description

Part 2 of our two-part breakdown of Wendi Adelson — the ex-wife of law professor Daniel Markel. On July 18, 2014, Dan Markel was shot in the garage of his Tallahassee home and died the next day. It was a murder-for-hire that grew out of the bitter custody battle following his divorce from Wendi. Five people have since been convicted, including Wendi's brother Charlie Adelson and her mother Donna Adelson. Wendi herself has never been charged — though prosecutors labeled her an "unindicted co-conspirator," and she later testified against her own mother, stating she "was not involved in any plot to kill Danny." In Part 1 we broke down the first half of her police interview from the afternoon of the murder. In Part 2, we finish the job — the back half of that interview, line by line, in the McClish/Hyatt statement-analysis tradition with our own Kill Jester flavor. And we answer the question so many of you asked under Part 1: based on the analysis, is Wendi involved? WHAT WE COVER IN PART 2: • The attorney's "am I a suspect" loop • Claimed distance from Danny's life vs. what she actually knows • A possible "attempted break-in" she floats into the record • The motive she narrates — "emotionally abusive," "told everyone I was mentally ill" • Her reaction when she learns the victim may still be alive • The boyfriend she doesn't volunteer until police name him • A composed notification call — and a subject aware she's performing • The word from Part 1 that comes back out of her own mouth • Our honest verdict on the full two-part series IN YOUR LIFE (what you can take from this analysis): • Watch the direction someone points — who they name as a suspect, and who they quietly leave out. • A performance isn't proof — but someone narrating their own composure is worth noticing. • Motive narrated is motive on the record, even when it's wrapped in "but I'd never." • Follow the boomerang phrase — a word handed to someone that comes back reframed as their own can reveal
