Description

Online multiplayer is now one of the most common features in gaming, allowing players to share a game with people without having to be in the same room. The idea goes all the way back to Empire, created for the Plato computer system in 19 73. Up to eight players could control spaceships in the same game, attacking each other across a network. Another game from the same period, Maze War, connected separate computers so players could move around the same 3D maze and shoot one another. Because both games were developed around the same time, there isn't a completely uncontested single inventor of networked multiplayer, but Empire is generally regarded as one of the earliest, and possibly the first, networked multiplayer games. Online multiplayer then evolved beyond simple competitive matches with Mud1 in 19 78. Mud1 placed multiple people inside the same persistent text-based world, where they could explore, communicate, fight, cooperate, and interact with the environment at the same time. It became the foundation for the massively multiplayer online role-playing games that would eventually lead to games such as Ultima Online and World of Warcraft. The concept became much more accessible in the 19 90s. Doom, released in 19 93, helped turn online multiplayer into a major part of PC gaming by allowing players to fight each other over local networks and other connections. A few years later, Quake pushed the idea further by being designed specifically with Internet play in mind. Its client-server architecture allowed players to host dedicated servers, and the game developed a huge online community after its release in 19 96. From those early network experiments, online multiplayer evolved into virtually every form of connected gaming we have today, from competitive shooters and co-op campaigns to persistent worlds and massive multiplayer games. Empire and Maze War were among the earliest games to have online multiplayer, Mud1 pioneered the shared online world, and Quake helped establish server-hosted multiplayer that became standard for modern games. #gaming #gamemechanics #onlinemultiplayer
