Description
Skill trees are one of the most common ways games let players customize how a character develops, allowing them to spend points on different abilities and gradually specialize their build. The modern version of this mechanic is most closely associated with Diablo II, released in 2000, but Blizzard North didn't invent the underlying idea from scratch. During development, lead developer David Brevik came up with the idea of adapting the technology trees found in strategy games like Civilization II into character progression. Instead of researching technologies to unlock new options for an empire, players would spend skill points to unlock and strengthen abilities for their own character.
The original Diablo had already experimented with character customization, but it worked very differently. Characters could learn spells by finding or buying books, and the same spells were generally available to different character classes. Diablo II replaced that system with separate skill trees for each class, where some abilities required players to invest in earlier skills before they could reach more powerful ones. This allowed two characters of the same class to play completely differently depending on where their points were spent.
After Diablo II, skill trees became a standard way to handle character progression across role-playing games, action games, and eventually many other genres. Games changed the format in countless ways, from simple branching trees to enormous webs of interconnected abilities, but the basic structure remained the same. So while the idea of branching technological progression came from strategy games, Diablo II is the game that established the modern RPG skill tree and helped turn it into a staple of character progression. #gaming #gamemechanics #skilltree
