Description
Did King Arthur really exist? In Part 1 of this 7-part history lecture series, we investigate the biggest puzzle of the Dark Ages: why the oldest writers of post-Roman Britain, including Gildas and Bede, never mention the most famous king in legend.
In the year 410, Rome told Britain to defend itself. Within a single generation, coins stopped, towns shrank and the island fell into a power vacuum. This is the world where the legend of King Arthur is said to have been born. Yet when we open the only eyewitness account, there is a missing name and a mystery that has divided historians for centuries.
IN THIS LECTURE YOU WILL LEARN:
- Why the Roman Empire abandoned Britain in 410 AD and what happened next
- Who Vortigern, Hengist and Horsa were and how the Saxon conflict began
- Why the monk Gildas describes Mount Badon but never names Arthur
- Why Bede, the father of English history, is also silent about Arthur
- The earliest hints of Arthur in the Welsh poem Y Gododdin and the Annales Cambriae
- Why the real Arthur, if he lived, was not a king in a castle, and the three theories historians still argue about
If this lecture taught you something your school never did, hit LIKE, SHARE it with someone who thinks they know the story of King Arthur, and SUBSCRIBE with notifications on so you never miss Part 2. Tell me in the comments: do you think Arthur was real?
