Description
Geraniums are the patio plant a single frost can wipe out overnight, and October is when most people lose theirs without realizing it was avoidable. The good news is that saving them takes about an hour, and waiting until November is where most of the damage happens. Do this now and the same plants will be blooming again next May instead of being replaced at the garden center.
📌 WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
✅ The difference between the geraniums most people grow in pots (technically pelargoniums) and hardy perennial geraniums, and why only one of them needs this routine
✅ How to tell when it's time to bring plants in, and why waiting for a frost warning is cutting it too close
✅ How to check leaves and stems for whiteflies, aphids, and gray mold before you carry them inside and give pests a winter home
✅ How to take healthy tip cuttings, let them callus, and root them in a well-draining mix without rotting them
✅ Why overwatering, not cold, is the most common reason stored geraniums die over winter
✅ How to overwinter in a sunny window or under a grow light, versus in a cool, dark space in a dormant state, and which works best for different homes
✅ Why you should hold off on fertilizer during winter, and when to start feeding again
⚠️ A quick note on timing: "October" assumes a Northern Hemisphere climate with a real frost. Go by your own first-frost date rather than the calendar. In mild zones you may have more time, and in the Southern Hemisphere the timing is different.
👇 Drop your zone and your first-frost date in the comments, and tell me whether you're saving your geraniums as whole plants or as cuttings this year.
