The Jōmon Were Never Who We Thought — Ancient Dna Finally Reveals The Truth

Who were the Jōmon people, and what does ancient DNA reveal about their origins? For thousands of years, these ancient hunter-gatherers lived across the Japanese archipelago, developing distinctive pottery, traditions, and communities long before Japan became a unified state. In this documentary, we explore Jōmon DNA, prehistoric Japan, ancient Japanese ancestry, and the migrations that transformed the population of the islands. Discover how genetic research has uncovered the Jōmon people’s distinctive ancestry and revealed their lasting contribution to modern Japanese populations. We also investigate the arrival of Yayoi-era migrants, the spread of rice farming, and newer evidence suggesting that later migrations during the Kofun period added another layer to Japan’s genetic history. What did the Jōmon look like genetically, how were they related to other ancient East Asian populations, and what can their DNA tell us today? Join us to explore ancient Japan, archaeology, human evolution, and the science reshaping our understanding of the Jōmon past. #jomoni #jomon #ancientdna #ancientjapan #japanese #jomon #prehistoric #yayoi #kofun #humanorigins #genetichistory #archaeology
