Description
A royal tomb beneath a palace floor reveals the final days of Qatna, a forgotten Bronze Age kingdom lost for 3,000 years.
Excavations at Tell Mishrifeh in Syria have brought to light a site that once stood alongside powerful neighbors like the Hittites. Researchers Peter Pfälzner and Michel al-Maqdissi led the work to recover the remains of a society whose names and history had largely vanished from our records. We look at the evidence found within the sealed burial chamber, which challenges what we know about the city's final days under the pressure of Hittite expansion.
By analyzing the clay tablets and artifacts recovered from the site, we can begin to reconstruct the complex ancient burial practices that defined this lost civilization. This discovery offers a rare glimpse into a royal lineage that was effectively erased by time and conquest, providing a clearer picture of how this vanished hub functioned before its destruction. If you enjoy stories about lost kingdoms and the archaeological excavations that bring them back to light, this one is for you.
