Description

You've been inside football stadiums before. So you think you know what happens in the minutes before kickoff. But nothing about what eighty-eight thousand people are doing inside Jordan-Hare Stadium is going to make sense until you look up. Just before the game, nearly 88,000 Auburn fans stop watching the tunnel and turn toward the sky. Then a real eagle launches above the stadium, circles over thousands of people, and begins its descent toward midfield. There is no wire attached to it. No hidden system is steering every turn. And when it reaches its handler, the entire stadium finishes the same cry together: War Eagle. The eagle is genuinely flying free. Months of training, repetition, food reinforcement, and trust sit behind a flight that lasts only seconds, and even then the handlers cannot completely control the path it takes. Wind matters. The bird matters. And once it leaves the release point, there is no second take. This is the story of Auburn's War Eagle tradition — a battle cry older than the stadium flight itself — and of the living eagles that carry it. The modern pregame flight began in 2000, but the legend reaches back more than a century. And in 2026, when War Eagle VIII, Aurea, could no longer fly because of an injury, Auburn chose to let her recover while Independence carried the tradition in her place.
