Description
A German naval intelligence officer read one line in a report from November 1942 and set the paper down before he could continue. The SS Robert E. Peary had been built in four days, fifteen hours, and twenty-six minutes. 🪖
Admiral Dönitz had built the entire U-boat campaign around a single arithmetic premise: sink more Allied shipping than the Allies could replace. In 1942, the math was working. Then American shipyards reached scale, and the math stopped working in a way Dönitz's planning staff hadn't thought possible. ⚔️
Five specific things drove that shift — and each one violated what German naval engineering tradition said was true about how ships were built. A man who had never built a ship applied dam-construction management to the problem and produced the most efficient shipbuilding operation in history. Women who had been housewives months earlier welded hull sections using skills acquired in weeks. Three eight-hour shifts ran continuously, seven days a week, through a system designed so that no individual worker needed to understand the whole ship. Liberty Ships launched at three per day at peak production. And by mid-1943, the tonnage war — the central strategic calculation of the entire U-boat campaign — was mathematically over. ⚙️
These aren't just production statistics. They're a portrait of two different industrial philosophies in conflict, and the one that was built on throughput rather than craftsmanship won. Subscribe if you want more of the forensic industrial history that explains the war's outcome. 🎖
What you'll discover in this video:
🪖 The SS Robert E. Peary and the build time that changed the frame for everything else
⚔️ Henry Kaiser — who had never built a ship — and why his ignorance of shipbuilding was the right starting point
🔧 The women welders who built Liberty Ships in weeks of training and why the German craft model couldn't absorb them
⚙️ The three eight-hour shifts that ran seven days a week and the philosophy behind continuous production
📊 The tonnage math: how Dönitz's central calculation became unworkable, and when he knew it
