Description

🔗 The Winter Ledger — the whole house from first frost to the mud, week by week. The window weeks are in it. It comes inside The Complete Winter Library: https://eliyodersecrets.com/warm 🔗 The Warm Room Letter — one job a week, in the order the winter comes: https://eliyodersecrets.com/letter Watch next — The $10 Blanket That Heats Itself All Winter: https://youtu.be/VawpHwuHcPQ Vermont, 1996. A team of engineers tests 151 old windows for the state. And all through their report they keep pointing at one leak — one that can make a tight window lose heat like a loose one. It is not the glass. It is not the sash. This video answers what it is. The trick in the picture is real. Cut a sheet of bubble wrap to the size of the glass. Mist the glass with plain water. Press the bubble side against it. About four dollars a window, no tape, no glue, and it peels off clean in spring. Now the word "half," said straight. On a single pane of glass, one layer of bubble wrap cuts the heat going through that glass roughly in half. That is the glass. It is not your bill. Bubble wrap by itself will not cut a heating bill in half. So the rest of the video is the rest of the window: the lock, the rope caulk, the curtain and the sun, the second layer — and the leak the engineers found, with the one job to do this weekend. In this video: how to put the bubble wrap up so it stays, which windows to do first, what a window salesman will not tell you, and the honest arithmetic of what a house like yours can expect. Safety first: never cover or seal a window you may need as a way out in a fire, and make sure it still opens. Check behind the wrap for water through the winter; if you see mold, take it down. Work from the floor, not a ladder. Do not sand or scrape old paint on window sashes — it may be lead. If you are older, keep the rooms where you live and sleep at sixty-eight degrees or warmer. Tell me in the comments: single glass or double, and your state.
