Description

The king who sentenced him ran to the den at dawn. What did he find? Darius the Mede sets an old exile from Judah over his whole kingdom, and the men beneath him go looking for a charge. They find nothing, so they write one: a decree that for thirty days no one may pray to any god or man except the king, sealed by the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed. Daniel goes up to his room, opens his windows toward Jerusalem, and prays three times a day as he always had. By sundown the king who loves him has run out of ways to save him. A stone is rolled over the den and sealed with the king's own signet. Darius does not eat and cannot sleep. At first light he runs to the den and calls into the dark — and a voice answers. Daniel narrates Daniel 6 in full from the Berean Standard Bible, in his own voice: the exile who read the writing on the wall, now sealed in with the lions. 📖 Scripture Reference: Daniel 5:30–6:28 (Berean Standard Bible) Related passages: Daniel 1:1, Daniel 2:4, Daniel 5:13, Daniel 5:19, 1 Kings 8:46–49, Deuteronomy 24:16, Isaiah 45:1. Scripture from the Berean Standard Bible (public domain). 📜 HISTORICAL CONTEXT IN THIS EPISODE: • "Satrap" comes from an old Persian title meaning "protector of the realm". • One Aramaic word, dat, names both "the law of his God" (6:5) and "the law of the Medes and Persians" (6:8): the conspiracy sets one law against the other. • The den (Aramaic gob) was a pit; ancient kings kept lions as a display of royal power. • The stone was sealed with the king's signet AND his nobles' seals (6:17), so neither side could open it alone. • Persian custom could punish a whole household; the Law of Moses forbade putting children to death for their fathers' sins (Deuteronomy 24:16). Sources consulted: Brown-Driver-Briggs and Strong's (dat, gob); Barnes and Ellicott on Daniel 6; Herodotus 3.119 If you would like to support us, consider joining our Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/gospelgenga 🌍 We're animating every chapter of the Bible, all 1,189 of them.
