Description
Deep beneath Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, cave divers entered the flooded chamber of Hoyo Negro and discovered the remains of Naia, a teenage girl who died around 12,000–13,000 years ago. Her skeleton was found among extinct Ice Age animals, but the real mystery began when scientists examined her skull. Its unusual shape seemed different from modern Native Americans, raising major questions about who first reached the Americas. Then DNA extracted from one of Naia’s teeth revealed a surprising connection to Indigenous peoples living today. Her discovery helped reshape the debate over ancient migration, ancestry, and the true story of the first Americans.
