The lower fort at Tap O’ Noth in Scotland was supposed to belong to a much older world. Then archaeologists dated its occupation to the Pictish period and mapped hundreds of possible houses across the mountainside. Up to 808 hut platforms appeared in the survey. If many were occupied together, thousands of people may have lived here. That is an extraordinary possibility for early medieval Scotland. But the dates do not prove every house stood at once, and the mountain holds an older secret above them. The real mystery is how large this forgotten settlement became.
