Description

Chocolate seems simple — break a bar, take a bite, and enjoy its sweetness. But behind that familiar taste is a story spanning thousands of years, ancient civilizations, royal courts, colonial empires, industrial revolutions, and millions of cocoa farmers. Long before chocolate became a candy bar, cacao was consumed as a bitter, spicy and sacred drink in Mesoamerica. It later traveled across the Atlantic, entered European royal courts, became a luxury enjoyed by the wealthy, and eventually transformed through revolutionary inventions into the chocolate we know today. From the cocoa press and the first chocolate bars to milk chocolate and conching, technology completely changed chocolate and made it affordable for ordinary people. But there is another side to the story. Today, most of the world's cocoa comes from West Africa, where millions of small farmers depend on this crop. Despite chocolate being a global multi-billion-dollar industry, serious issues involving farmer income, child labor and difficult working conditions continue to raise questions about how sustainable and ethical our chocolate really is. This is the story of how chocolate went from a sacred bitter drink to one of the world's most beloved foods — and why its sweetness still has a bitter side. 🍫 Watch until the end to discover the history behind the chocolate you eat every day.
