Description
The average super balance for Australians in their early seventies is almost half a million dollars. The typical person at that age has less than half that.
Here's the real balance at 55, 60, 65 and 70 - median and average - and what the Age Pension adds at each age (at three of the four, nothing at all).

WHAT'S IN THIS ONE (Age Pension rates from 20 September 2026)
- Median vs average super balance at every age (ATO data as at June 2024, analysed by ASFA, August 2026 - people with super only)
- Age Pension age is 67, not 65
- At 55: super is locked until preservation age (60); on JobSeeker before pension age, super still in accumulation isn't counted
- At 60: super unlocks once you've retired - and seven years of the full single pension (about $225,261) is more than the median balance
- At 65: the average is twice the median; super is fully yours, retired or not; you can claim the pension in the 13 weeks before you turn 67
- At 70: only about six in ten still have any super - mostly because people took it out, not deaths (ASFA)
- The Age Pension at 70 for a single homeowner: about $1,211.98 a fortnight on the median balance, about $668.45 on the average
- The surprise: with the pension added (and the 5% minimum drawdown), every balance from $185,120 to $492,903 lands between about $41,436 and $45,426 a year
- Why that isn't a reason to save less, and why more than half of people are below the average at every age
THE EXAMPLES ARE ILLUSTRATIVE: single homeowner, 67 or older, $30,000 of car and contents, super in an account-based pension at the 5% minimum drawdown, Age Pension only. Couples and renters are assessed differently. ASFA budgets: June quarter 2026.
