In mid-October, the government announces your 2027 Social Security raise. Forecasts sit around 3.5%, which would be the largest in several years. Everybody feels good for a few days. Then the deductions arrive, and in January the deposit is not what the news said.
Three things quietly take back part of that raise. The raise is announced in October, but these land on January 1. Only one of them is actually new this year, and that one is the easiest to miss.
I'm Franklin. I read the rules so you don't have to. Here's what each one takes, who it reaches, and what to do before it does.
🔹 RULE 1, THE PART B PREMIUM: It comes out of your check before you ever see the money. It's $202.90 a month this year and projected to rise to about $209.50. On a $2,000 benefit, a 3.5% raise is $70, and after the higher premium you keep about $63. It hits small checks hardest, because the raise is a percentage but the premium increase is a flat dollar amount. Hold harmless is a floor, not a shield, and it skips four groups entirely.
🔹 IF YOUR INCOME HAS DROPPED: The Medicare surcharge for 2027 is based on your 2025 income. Form SSA-44 can get it recalculated, and it can be worth well over $1,000 a year.
🔹 THE SCAM THAT RIDES EVERY RAISE: Your raise is automatic. Nobody legitimate asks you to confirm anything to receive it.
💡 BOTTOM LINE: The raise was decided without you. What survives the trip to your bank account is decided in the weeks after it, and that's a room you're in. Do the subtraction before you spend the percentage.
