Description
The flaming sword at the gate of Eden was not guarding the forbidden fruit. Genesis 3:24 says it guarded the way to the tree of life, and Genesis 3:22 tells you why.
In this deep dive into Genesis chapters two and three (King James Version), we read the Eden account line by line instead of from memory. You will see why Adam's job to "dress it and to keep it" uses the Hebrew verbs avad and shamar, the same pair later used for the Levites at the tabernacle. You will see how the serpent (nachash) is called "subtil" (arum) one verse after Adam and Eve are called naked (arummim), and how his lie repeats God's own words, mot tamut, with one word added in front: lo, not.
We look at what Eve added to the command, why Genesis never mentions an apple, and why the text says Adam was standing "with her." Then God asks his first question, "Where art thou?" (ayekah), which Genesis Rabbah hears as a lament. We look at the curse that falls on the serpent and the ground but not on the people, the promise of Genesis 3:15, Eve's name Chavvah, and the coats of skins.
At the center is Genesis 3:22: God sent Adam out "lest he... take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever." We answer the strongest objection, that the serpent told the truth and God was jealous, using Genesis 5 and Justin Martyr's Dialogue with Trypho. Then we follow the cherubim from Eden to the tabernacle, Solomon's temple, the garden tomb in John 19 and 20, and the tree of life in Revelation 2 and 22.
The central point: the gate of Eden was closed in mercy, so that sin would not become permanent, and the Bible ends with that gate open again.
