Eleven kinds. That is how many Christmas desserts my mother baked every December in a kitchen no wider than a hallway. I am Mrs. Doris, from Scioto County, Ohio, and I cooked for a whole school through thirty-five Decembers, Christmas parties and all. These are eighteen Christmas desserts from the sixties and seventies that have gone missing: cookies painted with egg yolk, persimmon pudding, rosettes off a hot iron, a pudding steamed in a coffee can, ribbon
gelatin, tunnel of fudge cake, nut roll on Christmas Eve, cherry winks, jam cake with caramel icing, green tomato mincemeat, boiled custard, and the seven-layer stack cake Gene's Aunt Lou would not let me cut for two whole days.
Eighteen forgotten Christmas desserts from the 1960s and 1970s, remembered by a retired school lunch lady from southern Ohio: egg yolk painted sugar cookies, persimmon pudding, rosette cookies, fruitcake, milk carton gingerbread houses,
fresh coconut cake, steamed pudding in a coffee can, spritz cookies, ribbon gelatin salad, tunnel of fudge cake, nut roll, cherry winks, jam cake, green tomato mincemeat, popcorn cake, boiled custard, and Appalachian dried apple stack cake. Old fashioned Christmas baking from mothers and grandmothers.
