On the night of September 21st, 1989, the most powerful hurricane to strike the Carolinas in a generation came ashore just north of Charleston. But it wasn't the coast that told the real story of Hugo. It was everything the storm did after it should have weakened – a wall of water nearly 20 feet high that swallowed the town of McClellanville, hurricane-force winds still tearing roofs apart in Charlotte almost 200 miles inland, and families trapped in a school shelter who climbed into the rafters as the water rose toward the ceiling. What followed became the storm that broke every rule about how far a hurricane can reach.
