Description

Rome is remembered as one of the greatest empires in human history. But behind the marble monuments, legendary armies, and famous Pax Romana was a darker story. In 30 BC, a nineteen-year-old named Caesarion — the son of Cleopatra and, according to Cleopatra’s claim, Julius Caesar — was killed after Octavian’s victory over Antony and Cleopatra. From that moment, Octavian began building something far greater than a military victory. He became Augustus. He transformed Rome’s armies, expanded its roads and administration, strengthened control over the provinces, and created a political system powerful enough to survive his own death. But the price of that stability was enormous. Exiles. Political purges. Succession struggles. Suspicious deaths. Betrayals. And when three Roman legions disappeared in the forests of Germania in 9 AD, Augustus learned that even the greatest empire had limits. Then came Trajan. By 117 AD, Rome had reached its greatest territorial extent — stretching from northern Britain to the Middle East. So how did Rome become the most powerful empire on Earth? Was the Pax Romana really peace? Or was Rome simply better than anyone else at hiding the violence that held its empire together? Watch until the end to see how one man’s political machine transformed Rome — and why almost two centuries of peace may have been built on something much darker.
