Description

The American alligator is the cleanest win in American conservation — hunted to the edge, protected by law, five million strong today. Then researchers spent two decades collecting blood and tissue from thousands of them across the South, and when the samples were finally lined up, the data refused to behave. What came back didn't describe one species quietly putting itself back together; it described something stranger, shaped by decisions made in the 1970s that nobody at the time thought of as genetics.
