Description

📘 THE BOOK: "The Old Scout Way: Walt's Camping & Fishing Manual" (120 camp and fishing tricks) 📗 ALSO: "The Old Scout Way: Walt's Camp Cooking Manual" (60 tricks for cooking with no kitchen) Get one, or both in a bundle: https://waltscampingsecrets.com I spent thirty-five years as a scoutmaster, and the cheapest roof I know still beats the dome tent on a still, damp night: a $5.49 blue tarp and $3.99 of cord from the hardware store, hung on a tight ridgeline with one small gap along the bottom edge that most first-timers close. In this video: Why a $329 tent can get wet inside on a night it never rains, and why the tarp stays drier The A-frame step by step: bowline, trucker's hitch, prusik, taut-line hitch, drip lines and a pebble tie-out How the same tarp fails when the line sags and the edges get pinned down Where the tent still wins: bugs, ticks, wind and snow, and why neither one is safe in lightning The old way works because a tarp lets your breath out instead of sealing it in with you, and nearly everything on it can be fixed by hand. Safety: nothing that burns goes under a tarp, and your shelter stays at least 15 feet from the fire and upwind of it (National Park Service). A tent offers no protection from lightning (National Weather Service), and neither does a tarp: when it thunders, get in a hard-topped vehicle with the windows up and wait 30 minutes after the last rumble. What's the oddest thing you ever stayed dry under? Tell me below, I read every comment. Subscribe for the skills they stopped teaching: https://www.youtube.com/@Waltcampingsecrets
