Description

The NBA is preparing to launch a European league in 2027 — but first, it needs to determine whether it will work with the EuroLeague or compete against it. EuroLeague shareholders are due to meet in Italy on October 5 to discuss a proposal for closer cooperation with the NBA, as both sides try to find common ground over the future of continental basketball. If an agreement is reached, the partnership could transform the governance, structure and financing of European basketball. If talks fail, the NBA says it intends to move ahead with NBA Europe in 2027, potentially creating a direct rival to the EuroLeague. The NBA's emerging proposal is expected to feature 16 teams, with 10 to 12 permanent franchises and four to six places available through qualification. Potential anchor markets identified for NBA Europe include London, Paris, Rome, Milan, Berlin, Munich, Istanbul, Madrid, Athens, Barcelona, Manchester and Lyon. The proposed league could feature existing European basketball clubs, franchises backed by outside investors and teams created by major European football clubs. Meanwhile, the EuroLeague is developing its own expansion plan. The competition could grow from 20 to 24 teams next season, with eight long-term franchise places reportedly attracting 14 bids worth more than €800 million in franchise fees. With the NBA also reportedly receiving bids in the $500 million to $1 billion range, the financial stakes are enormous. So what happens next? Can the NBA and EuroLeague find a way to work together — or are European basketball fans heading towards a new battle for the continent's biggest markets? Watch the full report for a breakdown of the NBA Europe proposal, the EuroLeague's expansion plans and what this could mean for the future of European basketball. ______________________________________ Every Game | Every Story | Every Angle Welcome to DRM Sports, your ultimate destination for the pulse of the pitch, the court, and the track.
