Description
An Alaska Trapper Pulled a Gray From the Ice in 1957 — It Took His Hand the Night the Sky Went Red
Yukon River, Alaska, November 14, 1957: a lone trapper below Circle pulled a small gray figure out of the river ice, alive, and kept it in his cabin until the red aurora of February 1958. A UFO documentary on Grays, a Cold War secret and the night the sky went red.
Built from a trapper's pencil journal and the 23 voice memos he recorded in hospice in 2019, with original archival recordings of Air Force officers from the U.S. National Archives. Why did the Gray choose one young man with seven dogs — and why did it give him back when it did not give back his neighbor?
Cases in this film:
• The International Geophysical Year, 1957–1958 — the most violent solar maximum on record
• The great red aurora of February 10–11, 1958 — seen as far south as Mexico, radio blackout across North America
• Circle, Alaska, and the Steese Highway closed by winter, 1957
• Wien Alaska Airlines mail flights landing on the Yukon River ice
• Ladd Air Force Base, Fairbanks, 1958 (later Fort Wainwright)
• Freeze-up on the Yukon River and the open leads of November
• Recorded interviews of Lt. Col. Sheridan Cavitt (1994) and Col. David D. Fulgham (1995), U.S. National Archives
Across the Cold War north, the stories told by trappers, pilots and radio men share a quiet pattern: something found alone, kept in silence, and a visit afterward from men who wrote nothing down. The witnesses rarely told anyone. Most of them told it once, at the very end.
The material presented here explores experiencer testimony and historical context through investigative narrative storytelling rather than verified scientific claims. Parts of the story are dramatized, and part of the visuals are reconstructed with generative AI; nothing here should be taken as factual confirmation. Some identifying details have been altered.
