She Lived 13 Years on the Eucharist Alone — Doctors Watched Her for 40 Days | Blessed Alexandrina For 13 years and 7 months, according to her official biography, a paralyzed woman took no nourishment other than the Eucharist. In 1943 she was admitted to a clinic in Porto, Portugal, and watched day and night for 40 days, as doctors tried to find out if it was really true. At the end, the director, Dr. Henrique Gomes de Araújo, signed a report he could not explain. This is the true story of Blessed Alexandrina Maria da Costa of Balasar (1904–1955). At 14 she jumped from a window to escape an assault and was left paralyzed for thirty years. On 182 Fridays she relived the Passion of Christ, and, according to the biography published by the Vatican, she lived on Holy Communion alone until the day she died. She passed away on October 13, 1955, the anniversary of the last apparition at Fatima, and was beatified by Pope John Paul II on April 25, 2004.
