Description

⚠️ Correction: don't put vinegar in your washing machine drum. It wears out the rubber seals over time. Strip towels in the bathtub instead (details pinned below). Your towel smells perfectly fine hanging on the rack. It is the moment it gets wet that it turns. And it is not drying you either, it pushes the water around your arms and leaves it there. So you wash them hotter, with more soap, and you add extra softener because they have gone stiff as well. It is not you. And those towels are not worn out. There is a coating on them. Think of a pan you have just oiled. Run water over it and it will not wet the surface at all, it gathers into beads and runs straight off. Not because the pan is dirty, but because there is a layer of something in the way. That is what has happened to every towel in your bathroom, and it is holding water out and holding something else in. In this one I go through ten rules for towels, counting down to the one that changes everything. And the two things that fix this are already in your kitchen. ➤ WHAT IS IN IT Why towels get their own load, and why half full is full. Why this is one of only two loads in the house that wants hot water. Why a brand new towel does not absorb, and what was sprayed on it before it ever reached the shop. Why the lint trap after a towel load is the towel itself. Where the smell is actually born, which is not in the machine at all but on the hook it hangs from. The two wash strip that takes off years of buildup, and why the two ingredients must never go in together. And the one product to throw out today. ➤ WHAT YOU NEED -Plain white vinegar -Baking soda -A towel bar, or anywhere a towel can hang spread out flat ➤ WHAT I MENTION Fabric softener works by depositing a waxy film on the fiber, which can reduce how much a towel absorbs by as much as half, flattens the cotton loops, and leaves a layer that damp bacteria live in. Cotton towels are given a silicone finish at the factory so they feel soft to a shopper's hand in the store, and it takes about three washes to break that down. Vinegar is an acid and baking soda is an alkali, so put them in the same water and they cancel one another out. ➤ SOURCES Truly Free, on fabric softener and towel absorbency Fig Linens and Beyond, on the new towel break-in period Parachute Home, on washing and caring for towels Tell me in the comments what color that vinegar water came out, because I have a feeling some of you are in for a surprise. And tell me how long it had been since your towels last dried you properly. And tell me your county. I read every one. Nothing here is lost. Just untaught. #towels #laundrytips #farmhouse #oldways #homemaking
