Financially, working another year will almost always make the numbers look better. You'll earn another year of income, give your retirement portfolio more time to grow, and have one less year of retirement to fund.
But that's only one side of the equation.
I retired at 54, and in this video I talk about the hidden cost of the “one more year” decision: you're also giving up one of the youngest and potentially healthiest years of your retirement.
We’ll talk about the one-more-year retirement trap, why being financially ready doesn't necessarily mean feeling fearless, what made me comfortable retiring early at 54, and some situations where working another year really may be the responsible decision.
If you're considering early retirement, retirement at 55, the Rule of 55, financial independence, retirement readiness, or simply wondering whether you have enough money to retire, I hope my experience gives you another way to think about the decision.
