Cop to Corrupt: Rise and Fall of Top Cop General Shadrack Sibiya

General Shadrack Sibiya is one of South Africa’s most senior and experienced police officers. But after explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in July 2025, Sibiya found himself at the centre of a storm involving the Political Killings Task Team, 121 investigation dockets, alleged relationships with people linked to organised crime, Cat Matlala, Katiso Molefe and allegations of corruption. In this video, we look at General Shadrack Sibiya’s journey from joining the police in 1988, to working with Interpol and the Scorpions, becoming Gauteng Hawks boss, facing disciplinary action over the 2010 Zimbabwean rendition case, heading Johannesburg’s Anti-Corruption Unit, and eventually becoming Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection in 2023. We then look at how General Sibiya became embroiled in the allegations raised by General Mkhwanazi, including the controversial removal of 121 Political Killings Task Team dockets and allegations concerning people connected to alleged organised crime. The Madlanga Commission later recommended disciplinary proceedings against Sibiya and an immediate investigation into possible criminal conduct, with criminal proceedings to follow if sufficient evidence is found. Sibiya has denied wrongdoing and has disputed the allegations against him. This video discusses allegations, testimony and information presented during ongoing investigations and proceedings.
