Description

In this video, I take you through every type of galaxy in the universe, from the familiar spiral we live in, all the way to galaxies made almost entirely of invisible dark matter. We start with the classic shapes: graceful spirals, our own barred spiral, the smooth elliptical galaxies full of ancient stars, and the chaotic irregular ones with no shape at all. Then we get to the strange ones. Ring galaxies born from head-on collisions, jellyfish galaxies trailing tentacles of newborn stars, and galaxies caught in the middle of crashing into each other. From there it gets violent. We reach the active galaxies, powered by feeding supermassive black holes, including quasars, the single brightest objects in the entire universe, and blazars, whose deadly beams are aimed right at us. And we finish with the extremes: the supergiant ellipticals holding a hundred trillion stars, the nearly invisible dark galaxies, and the very first galaxies that formed at the dawn of time. By the end, you'll see that a galaxy's type isn't permanent at all, and that our own Milky Way has an expiration date. ▶ More explainers every few days.
