Description

Near Kanorado, along the Kansas–Colorado border, archaeologists uncovered a remarkable Ice Age campsite buried beneath layers of ancient sediment. Known as the Kanorado Site, this rare Paleoindian discovery preserves evidence of human activity dating back approximately 13,000 years, offering an extraordinary glimpse into the lives of some of the earliest known inhabitants of the Central Great Plains. Unlike many archaeological sites disturbed by erosion or later human activity, Kanorado preserved ancient materials within their original geological context. Stone artifacts, evidence of human occupation, and carefully studied sediment layers have allowed researchers to investigate how early hunter-gatherers lived in this landscape. The possibility of even older, potentially pre-Clovis occupation has made the site particularly intriguing, although such an earlier presence has not been conclusively established. In this video, we explore what archaeologists discovered beneath the Kansas plains, how thousands of years of sediment protected the evidence, what the findings reveal about Ice Age life in North America, and why the Kanorado Site could contribute to a deeper understanding of when humans first occupied the Great Plains. Disclaimer This video is created for educational and entertainment purposes and discusses archaeological research concerning the Kanorado Site in Kansas, Paleoindian occupation, and the early human history of North America's Great Plains. Some information may be simplified for storytelling clarity, and some images, animations, artifacts, Ice Age landscapes, geological layers, and archaeological reconstructions may have been created or enhanced using artificial intelligence (AI). The phrase “Changing Everything We Know” is dramatic wording referring to the site's potential contribution to understanding early human settlement and archaeological preservation in the Central Great Plains. It does not mean established archaeological history has been disproven. Evidence of Paleoindian activity at Kanorado must be distinguished from the possibility of an earlier pre-Clovis occupation, which remains a subject of investigation rather than a confirmed discovery.
