Description
The apartment was too quiet. The absence of Alistair was a physical presence, a cold spot in the center of the room. Sarah stood before the bathroom mirror, the harsh light casting shadows under her eyes. She was brushing her hair, a mechanical, nightly ritual, when her reflection seemed to blur.
For a second, she didn't see her own face. She saw Melissa’s.
It was a trick of the light, a symptom of sleep deprivation and unresolved grief. But the image was so vivid she could almost smell Melissa’s perfume, a cloying mix of gardenias and something metallic, like blood.
Sarah gripped the edge of the sink, her knuckles white. For so long, she had hated that face. She had hated the effortless beauty, the magnetic pull that had drawn Alistair away from her steady, reliable love. She had constructed a narrative in her mind where Melissa was a creature of pure, malicious intent, a beautiful monster who had devoured her happiness.
But the face in the mirror was not malicious. It was terrified.
The memory surfaced, unbidden. The last time she had seen Melissa, in the sterile waiting room of the sanitarium. Melissa had been laughing at something a nurse had said, a bright, brittle sound that hadn't reached her eyes. In that moment, Sarah had seen a flicker of something behind the laughter: a frantic, desperate need to be seen as normal, as okay, as anything other than what she was.
Now, alone in the quiet apartment, the understanding washed over Sarah like a cold tide. Melissa hadn't stolen Alistair out of malice. She had taken him because he was safe. He was a psychiatrist, a healer. She had latched onto him like a drowning woman to a piece of driftwood, hoping his calm, analytical mind could anchor her to a reality she was desperately trying to escape.
And when he had seen the true depth of her chaos, when he had realized he could not fix her, he had let go. And she, in her terror of being truly alone, had thrown herself into the arms of the next available storm, the abusive Italian playboy, because the chaos was familiar. The storm was a language she understood.
Sarah set the brush down. The resentment that had been her companion for years felt suddenly, terribly heavy. She had been fighting a phantom, a villain of her own creation. The real Melissa was a woman so profoundly broken that she had mistaken destruction for connection.
She pressed her forehead against the cool glass of the mirror, closing her eyes. The ghost of Melissa’s face faded, leaving only her own. But the understanding remained, a permanent alteration to the landscape of her heart. She had finally seen the woman behind the myth, and the sight was a tragedy far greater than her own lost love.
