Yeah… no wonder Game of Thrones won 59 Emmys

Game of Thrones is the most decorated drama series in Emmy history, with 59 Primetime Emmy wins, yet its first pilot was such a failure that HBO recast two leads, replaced the director and reshot most of it. This video tells how a show that nearly died before it aired became the record-holder. The defining image is Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington, in the Battle of the Bastards: buried under a crush of bodies, mud and blood on his face, gasping as he claws his way up out of the pile, in his black Night's Watch-era leathers and fur on a grey, rain-soaked battlefield. Gold Emmy statuettes, winged women holding an atom aloft, are tumbling through the air all around him, some close and blurred, some sharp, as if the awards are raining down on the moment the show almost went under. The tension is the contradiction: a man drowning in the scrum while the trophies fall, the instant before he breaks the surface. The cast and crew, including Peter Dinklage as Tyrion, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys and director Miguel Sapochnik, speak in their own words about the failed pilot, the impossible battles and the 55 straight nights of The Long Night. The feeling is near-disaster turned into triumph. Subscribe for the casting story behind the next great TV drama.
